Why You Need a Great Sales Script!

If you’re like most salespeople, using a script is probably not your favorite thing to do.  So many salespeople have told me, “I don’t want to say the same things every time.  I want to be free to just talk off the top of my head.”  The challenge with doing that is that you can easily talk your way right out of a sale!

Now the truth is that if you’ve been selling for more than a few weeks, you already are using a script.  It’s just not formalized.  You say pretty much the same things to every person with whom you have a sales conversation.  So, the question isn’t do you use a script, the question is how well does your script work?  What’s your conversion ratio like?  If it’s less than 60% (6 out of 10 people with whom you talk), you need a new script!

The fact is that you script yourself all the time.  Whenever you have a conversation with anyone, the outcome of which is important to you, you don’t just sit down and start talking off the top of your head.  You think out the details beforehand.  As an example, if you want your significant other or one of your kids to change their behavior in some way that’s important to you, you’ll think about what you’re going to say, and how you’re going to say it, and what you’re going to say if they respond in a certain way.  That’s because most of the conversations you have with anyone about anything is really a sales conversation!

It’s vital for you to enter every sales conversation with total confidence.  If you don’t know what you’re going to say and how you’re going to say it, you won’t be totally confident.  And the challenge with that is that your energy of lower confidence will be felt by your prospects, and they will lack confidence too, and they will not buy if they aren’t confident.

One more thing:  how much money do you think Tom Cruise makes every year?  (One person answered that question by saying, “Too much!).  And how does Tom make a lot of his money?  He takes a script that someone else wrote, memorizes it, role plays it over and over until it is a part of him, and he is a part of it, rehearses it with the other actors, and then does it word-for-word on camera.  Now, I’m not telling you that if you use a great script that you’ll make as much money as Tom Cruise does.  I’ll just bet that it will be a lot more than you’re making now!
