The New Year is here, and you’ve likely been hearing us talk about goals for a few weeks now. Not only is the New Year an excellent opportunity to create goals for your business, but it’s also imperative to ensure the goals that you make are realistic and manageable. We’re not here to create extra work for you (although some of our clients know that we give out “homework” each week!), but we do want to motivate you to make your goals something that you’re working towards every day. Your goals should be action items that you consistently achieve and feel good about, all while striving to make your business even more successful.
Creating SMART goals with your business and marketing is one way to ensure the efficiency of what you’re doing, and protect you from wasting your time. To make sure your goals are clear and reachable, each one should be:
Specific (simple, sensible, significant)
Measurable (meaningful, motivating)
Achievable (agreed, attainable)
Relevant (reasonable, realistic and resourced, results-based)
Time-bound (time-based, time-limited, time/cost limited, timely, time-sensitive)
SMART marketing goals can be a variety of things. Let’s talk SEO for a second– how often are you thinking about your website’s Seach Engine Optimization? Are you working on and updating your website on a monthly basis? How about weekly? Have you hired an expert to ensure that Google loves your online presence? Maybe it’s time to create a few SMART SEO goals.
If those questions seem totally out of left field, it’s important for you to take a step back and assess where your business is truly at. It’s okay if you’ve never given a thought to SEO in the past– now is the perfect time to start! If you’ve been diligently updating your website and following SEO best practices, keep up the great work!
SMART goals work with other areas of your marketing as well. Don’t limit it just to SEO, or to marketing, or to your sales! Follow the SMART guidelines and each goal you make will be exciting, doable, and a little bit scary (that’s a good thing!). We would love to hear about what goals you’re crushing and any that you’re struggling with, so let us know in the comments!
